Lesson #2:

People have many different ways to get others to see them as they want to be seen.

One strategy that people utilize is self-handicapping. What this basically means is that people create obstacles and excuses for themselves so that if they do poorly on a task, they can avoid blaming themselves. If they do well in the task, then so much the better--they did it under adverse conditions. They must be a friggin' genius.

I thought about this self-handicapping business, and it sounded so pathetic. But I'm guilty of using this devious little strategy all the time. It's nice to make up excuses and obstacles to make yourself feel better, huh?

Uh huh.
